Regarding Hall and the film, Roger Ebert said: “Nixon is played by Philip Baker Hall, a newcomer to me, with such ferocious intensity, passion, hatred, and scandal that we can’t look away. Hall has a resemblance to the real Nixon; he could be a cousin, and he speaks in a similar tone. That’ll do it. This is a show, not an impersonation.”
“Mr. Hall’s tremendous performance, which is as stunning and hazardous – for the risks the actor takes and endures – like that of the Oscar-winning F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus,” wrote Vincent Canby of The New York Times.

Hall was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Male Lead. Anderson’s other films, Boogie Nights and Magnolia included him later. He also appeared in four films with Philip Seymour Hoffman.
