He was born in New York City on May 12, 1937, and died in Santa Monica, California on June 22, 2008. He was the son of The Sun’s advertising manager Patrick Carlin, an Irish immigrant, and his secretary Mary Beary, an American of Irish ancestry. Carlin was raised in a Roman Catholic household, but he rejected religion.

Because of his father’s alcoholism, his parents divorced when he was two months old. He was raised by his mother and older brother, Patrick Jr. At the age of 18, Carlin enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he was trained to be a radar technician. He also tried his hand as a disc jockey at Shreveport, Louisiana’s KJOE radio station, but he had mixed results.

Career:

When he was a teenager, he met a fellow DJ, Jack Burns, and they formed a comedy duo. The Wright Brothers, a morning show on KDAY in Hollywood, was created after the pair arrived in California and put together an audition tape. Although they parted ways after two years of working together, they remained close friends.

When Carlin was in his late 60s, he was making about $250,000 per year, and in the 1970s he began to transform himself into the persona that made him famous. The case of F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which the Supreme Court ruled 5–4 in favor of the government’s authority to regulate indecent material broadcast on public airwaves, revolved around Carlin and his “Seven Dirty Words” comedy routine. In 1977, he filmed the first of 14 stand-up specials he would do for HBO.

Less than four months before his death, he was filming his final HBO special, “It’s Bad for Ya.” In 2008, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was presented to his estate as a memorial to the late author.
