Robert William Barker was born in the little town of Darrington in the state of Washington. During World War II, he trained as a US Navy fighter pilot and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Drury College in 1947. (now University).

Barker began working at a radio station in California after graduating. Ralph Edwards, the guy behind the game programme Truth or Consequences, was initially drawn to him.

Barker took over as presenter of the television show in 1956 and stayed on until 1975.

Following a seven-year break, The Price Is Right returned to television in 1972. Barker went on to host the popular game show until 2007.

Barker is a well-known animal rights campaigner, in addition to his stint on game shows.

“Help limit the pet population,” he famously said at the close of every episode of The Price Is Right. “Get your cat fixed or spayed.”

He founded the DJ&T Foundation in 1994 to support pet sterilization, and he contributed $5 million to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 2009.

Career

Barker worked at Springfield’s KTTS-FM radio station while in college. He subsequently relocated to Palm Beach, Florida, where he worked as a news editor and broadcaster at WWPG 1340 AM now called WPBR in Lantana.

In 1950, he relocated to California, where he was granted his own radio show, “The Bob Barker Show,” which aired for six years in Burbank. Ralph Edwards, a game show producer, saw him while he was hosting an audience participation event in California. Barker then transitioned from radio to television, hosting “Truth or Consequences” in 1956. He was on the show until 1974.

He was chosen to anchor an NBC pilot named “Simon Says” in 1971, while still hosting “Truth or Consequences.” Then, in early 1972, CBS got interested in Mark Goodson and Bill Todman’s proposal to revive “The Price Is Right.” The network agreed to air it if Barker was chosen as the host.

As a result, Barker began presenting a more modernized version of “The Price Is Right” on CBS on September 4, 1972. He stayed in this post until October 31, 2006, when he announced his departure from the show and formally stood down as host.

Barker returned three times after leaving the show: once in April 2009 to promote his new autobiography; once in December 2013, to celebrate his 90th birthday; and once in April 2015, for an April Fools’ Day joke in which he briefly took over hosting duties from Drew Carey, who was the current host at the time.
