On Thursday, 16 March, Hugh Grant chuckled with the hosts of the US television show The View over his notorious 1995 sex scandal.

Hugh Grant’s Scandal

Los Angeles police detained Grant for engaging in “lewd conduct” with a sex worker called Divine Brown in a public setting. At the time, he had a committed relationship with model/actor Liz Hurley.

The 62-year-old actor was questioned by Sunny Hostin, the anchor of The View, about his campaigns against the British tabloid press.

To raucous applause from the hosts and studio audience, Grant continued, “Everyone thinks he’s just bitter because he got arrested with a hooker in 1995.”

“But you know what, really, who hasn’t?”, Whoopi Goldberg, Hostin’s co-host, chimed in.

Hugh’s Reminiscence of the Scandal

Hugh continued: “But actually it had nothing to do with that because that was never uncovered by tabloids. It was that the bloody police gave everyone the information. It was nothing to do with that.”

These big newspaper owners – largely non-tax-paying newspaper owners – are living above the law and invading the privacy of people whose kids are being killed in a road accident or whatever to get the sensational article,” he said.

No one dares to take them on in Britain because they’re so scared of them, especially the politicians. That’s why politicians, really in my country, are chosen by the press… That’s what my campaign is about.

Hugh and Liz at en event back in the day

One year after becoming famous in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Grant was arrested. He later described the incident as an “insane moment.” In the years that have passed, he has rarely brought it up.

In a statement at the time, Grant wrote: “I have hurt people I love and embarrassed people I work with. For both things, I am more sorry than I can ever possibly say.”

According to reports, Brown was paid $100,000 by the now-defunct News of the World for her narrative, which included her assertion that Grant told her: “I always wanted to sleep with a Black lady. That’s my ideal.

Hurley’s Response

When Hurley first opened up about the incident, two months after Grant’s imprisonment, she said that learning he had sex with a sex worker made her “feel like she had been shot.”

Hugh Grant

Grant was required to complete an Aids education program and pay a $1,000 fine.

In his “painful” Oscars red-carpet interview with model Ashley Graham, the actor has recently come under fire. Ashley Graham has since responded.

Conclusion

Hugh Grant was once arrested for being caught with a sex worker. He faced severe backlash for the incident and eventually released a public apology.
