Ingredients

  • 2 cups freshly brewed strong coffee
  • ½ cup whole milk or half-and-half
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper optional
  • Whipped cream for topping
  • Ground cinnamon or cocoa powder for garnish

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Coffee maker or espresso machine
  • Serving mugs

Method

  1. Prepare 2 cups of strong coffee or espresso and keep it warm while preparing the spiced milk mixture and add the milk, brown sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and cayenne pepper if using to a small saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat, whisking frequently until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes smooth.

  2. Continue warming the milk mixture for 2–3 minutes, allowing the cinnamon and chocolate flavors to infuse without bringing it to a boil.
  3. Slowly pour the brewed coffee into the spiced milk mixture and whisk gently until everything is fully combined.
  4. Taste the coffee and add more brown sugar if you prefer a sweeter drink or extra cinnamon for a stronger spice flavor.
  5. Divide the Mexican coffee between two mugs and top with whipped cream if desired.
