Ingredients

Brownie Batter
  • cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup all‑purpose flour
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder sifted if lumpy
  • ½ cup powdered sugar optional for crackly top
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup oil canola or neutral or ½ cup melted butter
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips optional
Optional Chocolate Frosting (for extra indulgence)
  • ½ cup butter
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 9×13‑inch or 8×8‑inch baking pan
  • Parchment paper or non‑stick spray
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your baking pan with parchment paper or grease it lightly.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, powdered sugar, salt, and flour until evenly combined.
  3. Add the eggs, oil (or melted butter), water, and vanilla extract. Stir until the batter is smooth and glossy avoid overmixing.
  4. Fold in dark chocolate chips if using.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).
  6. Remove from oven and let brownies cool in the pan while you prepare the frosting (optional).
For the Chocolate Frosting:
  1. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Remove from heat and whisk in cocoa powder until smooth.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with splashes of milk, whisking until silky. Stir in vanilla.
  3. Spread the frosting over the warm brownies.
  4. Let set before cutting into squares.
