Ingredients

  • 100 g unsalted butter softened for easy spreading
  • 4 cloves fresh garlic minced
  • 1 loaf baguette or sturdy bread preferably crusty
  • 1 tbsp olive oil optional, for extra crispness
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley chopped, for garnish
  • to taste salt and pepper for seasoning
  • a pinch red pepper flakes optional, for heat

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Sharp bread knife
  • Small saucepan
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and position the rack in the middle. Slice the baguette lengthwise into two halves, leaving a hinge if possible for easier handling.
  2. In a small saucepan, melt the softened butter over low heat. Add the minced garlic and cook gently for about 2 minutes until fragrant, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat.
  3. Using a pastry brush, generously spread the garlic butter mixture over the cut sides of the bread, making sure to get into all the crevices for maximum flavor.
  4. Sprinkle a pinch of salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using) over the buttered bread for added seasoning and a hint of heat.
  5. Place the bread on a baking sheet cut side up and bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, until the edges are golden and crispy, and you hear a satisfying crackle when tapped.
  6. For an extra crunch, switch to broil mode for 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning. The crust should turn deep golden brown and crackle beautifully.
  7. Remove the bread from the oven and sprinkle the chopped parsley evenly over the hot surface. Let it rest for 2 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  8. Slice the garlic bread into individual pieces and serve immediately while still warm and crispy, enjoying the crackling crust and soft, garlicky center.

Notes

Use room temperature butter for easier spreading. Crush garlic thoroughly for maximum aroma. For extra crispness, broil briefly at the end. Rest the bread before slicing to enhance flavor and texture.
