Ingredients

  • 3 medium yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup dry white wine or water
  • 12 ounces sour cream
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1 garlic clove finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For Serving
  • Potato chips
  • Pita chips

Equipment

  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Food processor or hand mixer
  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Serving Bowl

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, salt, and sugar, then stir well to coat the onions evenly.
  2. Cook the onions slowly for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become soft, deep golden brown, and caramelized. Add small splashes of wine or water as needed to prevent sticking and help lift the flavorful browned bits from the pan.
  3. Remove the caramelized onions from the heat and let them cool slightly. Chop them into smaller pieces for a smoother dip texture.
