Goggins played football in high school and went on to play at a community college, but he was forced to quit due to a heart defect.
After leaving college, Goggins worked as an exterminator for several years before joining the United States Air Force in 1994. After serving for several years, Goggins applied to become a Navy SEAL, but he was initially rejected due to his weight and lack of running experience.

He graduated from the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training program in 2001, and he went on to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan. Despite his success, Goggins continued to struggle with his weight and his mental health. He suffered from depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and he often used food and alcohol to cope. In 2005, he left the military and returned to civilian life, but he found it difficult to adjust. He gained weight and fell into a deep depression.
Goggins hit rock bottom in 2005 when he weighed over 300 pounds and was living in a tiny apartment in San Diego. He was watching television one day when he saw a documentary about the Badwater Ultramarathon, a 135-mile race through the hottest place on earth, Death Valley. Inspired by the challenge, Goggins decided to sign up for the race, even though he had never run more than a few miles at a time.
Goggins started training for the race, but he quickly realized that he had a long way to go. He struggled to run even a few miles without stopping, and he was plagued by injuries and setbacks. But he refused to give up. He pushed himself to run farther and faster every day, and he used his mental toughness to overcome the pain and fatigue.
Goggins completed the Badwater Ultramarathon in 2006, and he went on to complete several other ultramarathons and endurance events. He also lost over 100 pounds and transformed his body and mind. He became a motivational speaker and wrote a bestselling book, “Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds,” which details his incredible journey.
