Celtics suspend coach Ime Udoka for 2022-23 season

Ime Udoka, the Boston Celtics’ coach who guided them to the NBA Finals last spring, has been placed on a one-year suspension, thereby barring him from the team for the entire 2022–23 season, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

The team kept that information a secret, so the people spoke to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity. The Celtics started Udoka violated team policies in a statement released Thursday night following a full day of negotiations over the specifics of the punishment. They also left open the prospect that a longer separation may follow.

The franchise stated, “A decision regarding his future with the Celtics beyond this season will be made at a later point.

According to one of the sources who spoke with The AP, assistant coach Joe Mazzulla will serve as temporary coach. In order to get ready for the season opener on October 18, the defending Eastern Conference champions will conduct a media day on Monday and start training camp on Tuesday.

Udoka expressed his regret “to our players, fans, the whole Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down” in a statement that was made public by ESPN.

He apologized and added, “I respect the team’s decision. I am sorry for placing the squad in this tough situation. I won’t comment further out of respect for everyone concerned.

Udoka, a longtime assistant coach, guided Boston to a 51-31 record last year by going 26-6 in the final 32 games. This was his first head coaching position in the NBA. On their road to the NBA Finals, where they were defeated by the Golden State Warriors in six games, the Boston Celtics defeated Brooklyn, Milwaukee, and Miami.

The news shocked the NBA and upset a club that had been considered one of the favorites to challenge for the championship this year. It would be the franchise’s franchise-record 18th game.

It’s uncertain how keen Udoka and the Celtics will be to get back together.

Udoka, 45, played for San Antonio for most of his NBA playing career before joining Gregg Popovich’s coaching staff as an assistant. Udoka served as a member of the Spurs staff from 2012 to 2019, winning the championship in 2014. He rapidly made it onto shortlists for available head coaching positions.

He played in Brooklyn during the 2020–21 season and Philadelphia during the 2019–20 season before being hired by the Celtics in June 2021 to replace Brad Stevens, who was promoted to the front office. The Celtics came within two wins of winning the championship in Year 1, and Udoka placed fourth in the coach of the year voting.

Udoka said following the NBA Finals, “We’re just getting started, but the future is bright.”

Maybe not.

The shocking news on the eve of training camp is the latest development before what was anticipated to be a strong season for the most prestigious franchise in the NBA.

The Celtics strengthened their runner-up team by adding experienced big Danilo Gallinari as a free agent after getting guard Malcolm Brogdon in a trade from Indiana. However, Gallinari will miss the upcoming season after tearing the ACL in his left knee last month.

Center Robert Williams, a crucial member of the Boston defense lineup who battled through injuries during the playoffs the previous year, is currently experiencing knee soreness and will likely miss the beginning of the current campaign.

The Celtics were also referenced in rumors about Kevin Durant, a forward for Brooklyn who requested to be transferred before withdrawing his request. Durant is a ten-time All-Star. Although nothing came of the conversations, it cast doubt on Boston’s dedication to rising star Jaylen Brown.

This summer, Mazzulla applied for the coaching position with the Utah Jazz, which ultimately went to Will Hardy, another of Udoka’s assistants in Boston the previous year.

Only a two-year tenure at Division II’s Fairmont State in West Virginia, where he went 43-17 and reached the NCAA tournament in his second season, qualifies Mazzulla’s only prior experience in the role of head coach.

Mazzulla, a Rhode Island native who grew up in New England, played basketball for West Virginia, served as an assistant coach with the Celtics’ G League squad before taking over at Fairmont State, and was rehired by the team in June 2019 to work under Stevens.

Mercyhurst was the opponent in Mazzulla’s final contest at Fairmont State. His first meaningful game with the Celtics may garner a little more interest because Boston is set to visit longtime rival Philadelphia in the first game, which will also serve as the start of a yearlong celebration of Hall of Famer Bill Russell.
