Early Years

The birth of Sydney McLaughlin occurred in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on August 7, 1999. She is the daughter of Willie McLaughlin, a 400-meter semi-finalist in the 1984 Olympic Trials. Her mother, Mary Neumeister McLaughlin, ran in high school. Kelvin H. Walker eventually prepared her during her stay at Union Catholic Regional High School.

Sydney McLaughlin grew up in Dunellen, New Jersey, and is a 2017 graduate of Union Catholic Regional High School in Scotch Plains, where she earned the inaugural double cross Gatorade Track and Field Player of the Year.

In addition to achieving sustained academic achievement, McLaughlin began running at a young age, following in the footsteps of his brother Taylor and older sister Morgan. Taylor, who competed for the University of Michigan, won silver at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in the 400 m obstacles. Her younger sibling, Ryan, was accepted as a track standout at Union Catholic following his older sibling.

Sydney McLaughlin began competitive track activities at a young age. She was competing in the under-20 public junior titles at the age of 14. In 2014, she placed second in the 400-meter obstacles and set the global age record (14 years) and the public secondary school green bean standard.

She continued to compete in high school, and her improved performance qualified her for the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships held in Colombia, where she won gold. She qualified for the Rio Olympics in 2015, becoming one of the youngest athletes to represent the United States in Olympic-style sports. Sydney McLaughlin was able to go to the semi-finals of the 400-meter hurdles in Rio but was unable to secure a position in the final four.

Sydney McLaughlin joined the University of Kentucky after Rio to compete for their Olympic-style events team. During her stint at the foundation, she established new standards for the World Junior 400-meters and Collegiate and NCAA 400-meters hurdles competitions.

In 2018, while still a student at the University of Kentucky, Sydney Mclaughlin became professional (thereby surrendering school rivalry) and signed a sponsorship deal with pristine Balance.

McLaughlin once again qualified to represent the United States at the Tokyo, Japan Olympic Games in 2020. She competed in two events, 4400 meters hand-off and 400-meters obstacles, winning gold in both events and setting a new world record in the obstacles competition.

The recent record holder was Lashinda Demus, who ran 39.98 in 2001. The record was McLaughlin’s first attempt over 300m obstacles, as secondary school track meets in New Jersey do not have 300m obstacles.

Her season time of 38.90 is regarded as a North American record and is ranked second all-time behind Zuzana Hejnova’s 2013 performance of 38.16. Later that month, at the 123rd Penn Relays, McLaughlin had the fastest secondary school girls (400 m) transfer split during the Championship of America secondary school girls 4400.

After receiving the mallet last in a field of eight groups, McLaughlin posted a split of 50.37, passing five groups and guiding her Union Catholic hand-off group to a third-place finish in 3:38.02 seconds.

On June 18, 2017, she surpassed this record in the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Meet. With a split time of 49.85 seconds, she surpassed five sprinters in sixth place to lead Union Catholic to victory after passing them on the final handoff.

In 2015-16 and 2016-17, McLaughlin was named the Gatorade National Female Athlete of the Year. She was the leading contender to repeat in the 15-year history of the award. When she won the award for the second time in July 2017, at the age of 17, she was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated and the magazine described her as “one of the most dominant high school athletes of all time.”

McLaughlin won her 400-meter hurdles intensity (55.46) and semi-last (55.22) at the 2016 United States Olympic Trials.
