When he was in the ninth grade, his family moved from Highland Park, New Jersey, to Potomac, Maryland, where he has lived ever since. From 2013 until 2016, he attended Bullis School and played football there, throwing for 5,308 yards and 54 touchdowns. He had committed to play NCAA football for the University of Maryland over Rutgers University, but after Maryland football coach Randy Edsall was fired in the middle of the season, he changed his mind and chose Ohio State University.

Bypassing for over 4,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a single season, he broke Ohio State and Big Ten single-season passing and touchdown records, becoming one of only seven NCAA quarterbacks to do so.
