As Soon as Selma Blair Was Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, She Knew Something Was Up
Selma Blair has spoken openly about the moment she realized she had multiple sclerosis as part of her ongoing commitment to raising awareness about the disease.
Her leg went out as she was walking in a Christian Siriano show in February 2018, and she realized something was amiss after years of “strange symptoms,” she said in an interview with Variety.
Blair says she realized the symptoms weren’t psychosomatic at that point since she was so excited to be a part of the cast.
This is a moment I want to remember for the rest of my life,” Blair said in an interview with Variety, which observed that his hands “essentially quit working” a few months later.
This isn’t the first time that Blair, the subject of a Discovery+ documentary on her health issues, has made headlines. Actress and fashion designer Selma Blair has opened out about her experience during a recent fashion show, saying that she noticed a lack of sensation in her leg while on the runway.
Actress Cruel Intentions recalled how she suddenly lost feeling down her left leg as she walked down the runway during a fashion presentation. It didn’t help that I was standing on a runway and wondering what to do next.
Prior to her public announcement in October of her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis (MS), Blair expressed her thoughts on the experience on Instagram in February.
“It was three years ago. Two of my closest friends joined me for the Siriano event. On that particular day, I went for a walk. On the show. My leg was numb for the first time, and I noticed it for the first time.
When I first walked out the door for the first time. “I couldn’t feel the ground or lift my left leg,” she said in the captions of images taken on the night of the concert. It seemed as though my brain was struggling to make sense of it all. Stunned, I made my way down the catwalk. “It didn’t put a damper on my day.”
The diagnosis of MS was a comfort for Blair as her battle was only beginning, but she later said that she would have been less hard on herself if she had known the reason for her symptoms sooner.
“It would have helped me emotionally if I could have acknowledged that there was something true — a name that people understood,” she added. The moniker of a “f***ing trouper” would have made things a lot easier for me if I had found it sooner.
“I’d make comparisons with other people. Her words were followed by the statement, “I never realized that people didn’t hurt every day,” which she followed up with, “I’ve hurt since I can remember.”
In an interview with Vanity Fair in August, Blair remembered how she was told to “prepare plans for dying” as she underwent numerous medical treatments to cure cancer.
“Not because I have MS, but because I’m fighting MS,” she says in the trailer, “I was told to make plans for dying.”
After a successful stem cell transplant, Blair revealed last month that she is in remission and her “prognosis is great,” despite her long struggle with cancer.
On October 21, Discovery+ will begin broadcasting Selma Blair.
