Welsh comedian and TV/radio host Rhodri Paul Gilbert was nominated for the 2005 Perrier Best Newcomer Award. Nominated for the top comedy prize in 2008 (as the Edinburgh Comedy Awards were then branded)

Gilbert has hosted a weekly show on BBC Radio Wales, appeared on numerous television and radio panel shows and even performed stand-up comedy at the Royal Variety Performance.

Gilbert took over as presenter of the BBC Two panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks in September 2014, after the show had gone five seasons without a consistent figure at the helm. The show lasted until May 2015, however.

What Is Rhod Gilbert’s Illness?

The comedian announced his cancer diagnosis in July 2022. He said that he is undergoing treatment at a cancer center in Wales, but did not specify what kind of cancer he has.

As a result, he remarked, “I know better than anyone that I am in the greatest possible hands, even if I never expected that I would be a patient here.”

I am having excellent treatment from the NHS. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, but if it all works out, I might have a new stand-up show and a 40-minute diatribe on orange squash.

His Facebook statement said, “As a proud patron of Velindre Cancer Centre, I’ve toured the world, staged riotous quizzes, and star-studded comedy evenings.”

There are so many wonderful people I’ve gotten to know over the past decade, from the staff to the patients to the families.

Comedian Being Treated for Cancer

In an interview, comedian and TV host Rhod Gilbert revealed he is undergoing cancer treatment.

The 53-year-old Carmarthen native claimed to be a patient at Cardiff, Wales’ Velindre Cancer Centre, the hospital he has supported as a patron for the past decade.

He thanked the center’s workers in a Facebook post, writing that he had never expected to need their services until receiving his diagnosis.

Gilbert, who has hosted shows like “Apprentice: You’re Fired” and “Never Mind the Buzzcocks,” ended up being diagnosed with cancer in 2015, although he never told anyone what kind.

He went on to say, “As a proud patron of Velindre Cancer Centre, I’ve traveled the world, organized crazy quizzes, and star-studded comedy evenings.

Inspiring doctors, nurses, and caregivers, as well as patients and their loved ones, are just some of the people I’ve met During the past decade, it has played a pivotal role in my life.

Even though I never expected to be a patient here, I am confident that I am receiving the highest quality care. I am having excellent treatment from the NHS.

I don’t want anyone else to go through this…” If I make it through this, maybe I’ll have a new stand-up show and a 40-minute diatribe on orange squash.

The Welsh radio host has also appeared as a guest on such series as “Would I Lie to You?,” “QI,” and “Mock the Week” on BBC Radio Wales.

Gilbert, who in 2013 wed comedian and writer Sian Harries, expressed gratitude not only to his spouse and her family but also to his extended family and friends.

He explained that he would be unavailable for the time being so that he could concentrate on his healing: “I’ll be gone for a bit and won’t be talking further, at least not for now.”

Gilbert also mentioned that he was attempting to reschedule his Book of John comedy tour for the beginning of the next calendar year (2023).

Rhod Gilbert ‘Blown Away’ by Outpouring of Support for Velindre After Cancer Diagnosis

In light of his cancer diagnosis, comedian Rhod Gilbert has been “blown away” by the outpouring of love and support he has received. The Carmarthen-born comedian, 53, announced online lately that he was undergoing treatment at Cardiff’s Velindre Cancer Centre.

After the news broke, a single fundraising event was planned, but it swiftly snowballed into a month-long series of comedy shows for a good cause in south Wales.

The radio and TV host is a patron of Velindre Cancer Centre, and he has personally raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for cancer patients by doing things like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and presenting comedy evenings.

The comedian expressed his excitement that his experience with cancer could be used for “something so positive” to benefit others in a similar situation.

As Rhod continues treatment at the center over the next three months, comedian Gareth Morris of Ammanford said he was motivated to “take up the baton” and make sure the rest of Wales’ comedy community does their bit, too.

The initial idea was to stage a single comedy night in Cardiff, but the overwhelming response sparked the notion of a much larger undertaking.

Mr. Morris remarked, “Mr. Gilbert’s fundraising efforts throughout the years have been nothing short of inspiring.”

Intent on hosting a one-off comedy night to raise money for the Velindre Centre, I was surprised to find that many comedians were eager to pitch in.

Within the space of an hour, we had fourteen people working together to organize a series of performances aimed at benefiting the center financially. Being a part of it has been an amazing experience.
