Matt Lucas, a contestant on the Great British Bake Off, has previously opened up about his experience with alopecia areata (hair loss).

Without a doubt, others in a similar situation will benefit from his candour, and Matt has even been in touch to express his support. Most recently, he used Twitter to support a teenage fan who bravely uploaded a picture of himself without any hair.

Regarding his own struggle, Matt spoke about it in his biography Little Me. He added that at first, physicians thought the disease developed as a result of shock following his being “knocked down by a car” while on a family vacation in Portugal.

Two years later, in 1980, he started to lose his hair, and regrettably, his baldness came to characterise him. The fact that I was the young guy in the community with no hair at all “quickly overpowered everything and anything else that I was,” Matt wrote.

I was never permitted to forget that I was bald, he continued. Adults and kids would stare at me whenever I went swimming, to the movies, to the store, or even just walked down the street. He continued to try numerous forms of treatment, but they were all unsuccessful.

As a result of his childhood issues with asthma, eczema, hay fever, and allergies, he later realised that his hair loss had actually been caused by an overactive immune system. The reason his body had rejected his hair, according to the doctors, was that his body was continuously seeking enemies.

Since there is currently no recognised treatment for the ailment, Matt has learnt to live with it. We salute Matt for his openness because dealing with it can be unanticipated and difficult.
