For his tough-guy roles in the Taken movies, Liam Neeson is well-known. Despite his youthful appearance on screen, the actor, who is now 70, was hampered by “agonising” cramps in his left leg, which he subsequently discovered were the result of excessive coffee use.

Neeson’s newest film Memory, which was released in April 2022, tells the story of an accomplished assassin who becomes the target of a criminal organization after a botched hit on a rival gang.

Neeson has been helping fellow Irish actor Eamonn Holmes deal with his chronic pain after the broadcaster had his own experience of the disease.

In a flying conversation with Holmes, Neeson allegedly said: “Rest is rust, action is lotion.”

The actor who made an unexpected appearance in Derry Girls recently opened out about his personal experience with leg cramps from a few years back.

“I was having shooting sensations in my leg, spasms in the middle of the night,” the celebrity said on Radio 5 Live at the time. I cried because of the excruciating discomfort.

The massage therapist who treats all the Broadway dancers was recommended to me by a friend, and he worked on me.”

Express UK says that a massage therapist was able to cure Neeson’s cramps after he was in a significant amount of discomfort.

It was revealed by the celebrity that “he got rid of lactic acid crystals in my leg and after that,” he said further.

In the muscle, lactic acid crystallizes into a variety of shapes. The larger these crystals grow, the longer the muscle is tense.

When the muscle is tense, blood flow is restricted, preventing waste materials from being flushed out as effectively as when the muscle is relaxed.

In order for muscles to produce lactic acid, they must be overworked for lengthy periods of time.

When lactic acid builds up, no amount of fluid consumption will be sufficient to remove it, according to Huddersfield Sports Massage Therapy. Muscles that are constantly tense capture the vast bulk of this acid.

When these crystals come into contact with pain-sensitive muscle fibers, they cause extreme pain and long-term crippling effects on the body because critical nutrients aren’t being provided.

Overuse and dehydration are common causes of muscular lactic acid buildup, according to the Mayo Clinic, but it appears that Neeson’s excessive coffee intake accounted for much of his buildup.

“In response to a question from the counselor, “Do you consume a lot of caffeine?” Neeson responded, “Yes, I do,” Neeson explained.

When he suggested that I consider switching to decaffeinated coffee, I did so.”

“And 90% of the cramping went away.”

Neeson admitted that he is now “addicted” to decaf tea, a safer alternative to coffee, after giving up caffeine and experiencing the relief it brought to his terrible cramps.

Long-distance running, in particular, raises blood glucose concentration, according to Graham and Spriet’s research. The buildup of lactic acid is explained by the fact that when the body does not have enough oxygen to convert glucose into energy, it produces lactic acid instead.

As most studies reveal, coffee use raises the levels of lactate in the bloodstream.

People should be conscious of how much caffeine they take each day as a result of this. Most individuals can tolerate up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, according to the Mayo Clinic. That’s about the same amount of caffeine as two “energy shot” beverages, ten cans of soda, or four cups of brewed coffee.

Caffeine overconsumption can lead to a variety of symptoms and health concerns, including the following:

  • Restlessness and shakiness
  • Insomnia
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fast heart rate
  • Dehydration
  • Anxiety.

Drinking water and stretching before and after exercise are two of the best strategies to prevent lactic acid crystals from developing. Additionally, the Mayo Clinic advises that caffeine and protein intake be moderated, with an emphasis on consuming more fruits and vegetables if necessary.
