After secretly exchanging vows the day before her bone marrow transplant, Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste and New York Times best-selling author Suleika Jaouad got married.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Jaouad, who was diagnosed with leukaemia for a second time, revealed the news.
Her memoir, “Between Two Kingdoms,” chronicles her battle with leukaemia and subsequent recovery in which she recounts her wedding day before she was admitted to the hospital for a bone marrow transplant.
I think we’ve known since the first week of our relationship that we wanted to get married,” Jaouad said. That was the first time Jon broached the subject of getting married to me. We’ve been together for eight years now. There’s no rushing into this, you know!
According to her, it was a “tiny, beautiful, little ceremony,” and the couple opted for bread ties rather than traditional wedding rings because of how unexpected the event was.

Jaouad said that Batiste told her months before her second cancer diagnosis that a proposal was in the works.
In response, he said, ‘I just want to be very clear, I’m not proposing to you because of this diagnosis. For the past year, I’ve been working on your ring. So, don’t worry about the timing of it. However, I want you to know that this diagnosis has no effect on your life.
As a result, I’m even more certain that I want to make this commitment and be with you.’ It was only after realizing how short our window of opportunity was before the bone marrow transplant that we made the decision to try “Jaouad made the comment, as per usual.
When we walked into the bone marrow transplant unit, I’ll tell you, we were on cloud nine.” “she remarked on the subject. “Love and happiness had filled us to the brim after this wonderful evening spent together. And I firmly believe that this was the lynchpin that kept us afloat.”
A total of five Grammys went to Batiste, including album of the year for “We Are.”
