Dominic Matteo, born on April 28, 1974, is a retired Scottish footballer who played as a defender and midfielder throughout his 17-year professional career (from 1992 to 2009).

He played in 366 games for his team, both in the league and in cups. Of those, 276 were in the Premier League.

Ex-Liverpool Star Dominic Matteo Still Fighting Daily Battle Two Years Since Brain Tumour

Dominic Matteo’s life was irrevocably altered over two years ago when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

In November of 2019, a brain scan during a regular check-up revealed a big cancerous tumour, prompting the former Liverpool, Leeds United, and Scotland defender to undergo an emergency seven-hour operation.

When asked to reflect on those terrifying times, he explains: “In a single minute, I went from being productive to a crumpled mess. This is the last place I should be.

“Due to my ignorance, I was terrified. Inexplicably, I went from working in television one day to battling for my life the next.” The sad news that Matteo had a form of brain cancer called Anaplastic Ependymoma, and that he was only one of two individuals in Europe to have it, followed the life-saving operation that saved his life.

Even though surgery has helped his prognosis in the near term, he still has a long road ahead of him in his battle against the disease.

To wit, he says: “Right now, I can’t accomplish anything because I still can’t read, write, or drive.

“But I’m still able to carry a normal conversation despite the condition. It’s like going back in time to your childhood, but it helps to have supportive adults in your life who have been there and can offer advice on how to move through this stage and find joy in the world again.”

In fact, Matteo’s cancer diagnosis hasn’t stopped him from starting a foundation to aid the poor, particularly people with comparable health problems.

The idea was inspired by a meeting with brain tumor patient Dave Bolton, who defied the odds by surviving for seven years after receiving a prognosis of only 12 to 18 months.

Bolton, a retired police officer and current kickboxing world champion, not only comforted Matteo during his cancer treatment, but also motivated him to help others.

In regards to their friendship, Matteo had this to say: “Something brought us together, in my opinion. It’s not always easy to form an immediate opinion of a new person, but I had an instant rapport with Dave.

“Tough topics are welcome in our conversation. For ourselves, it will be worth it if we can aid others in their own struggles.

“Dave and I ignore those who tell us the statistics about how long we have to live. Dave shares my disbelief in that idea. “Of course we all have difficult days, but now we have tools to deal with them, and if we can encourage others to do the same, that would be great.

Unless a miracle cure is discovered, which is possible (they did sort Covid out quite quickly, didn’t they? ), “me and Dave will never be out of treatment.”

His Fight Against Brain Cancer?

In 2019, Dominic Matteo was diagnosed with an ependymoma, a rare kind of brain cancer.

The brain scan that resulted from the normal check-up revealed the big malignant tumour, forcing the seven-hour operation on a former Liverpool player in 2019. This is the deadliest brain tumor, and he is fighting to survive it.

According to an interview Matteo gave to Mirror, he went from working to collapsing in a heap without warning, which frightened him because he couldn’t figure out what had happened. He was working on TV the day before the crash, and the next day he was fighting for his life.

Dominic Matteo, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor, is still struggling to get better.

While fighting this dangerous disease, Matteo’s eyesight deteriorated to the point where he could no longer read or write. He, too, is unable to navigate the roads. But he can still communicate, and he enjoyed the experience so much that he felt like a kid again.

The ex-footballer is still re-learning to write and read, but his wife says he’s having trouble with the spellings on his eight-year-old son’s homework.

As an added bonus, Matteo is now active in charitable work; he has always been, and has always considered this to be, one of his greatest hobbies. Also, there has been a 30% increase in the number of persons seeking their assistance since March of 2020, according to him and his team.
