Ashton Kutcher claimed he is “fortunate to be alive” after fighting a rare form of vasculitis, which involves inflammation of the blood vessels.

Kutcher explains what he’s gone through during a forthcoming episode of National Geographic’s Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge. An exclusive clip of the program was posted by Access Hollywood on Monday.

To paraphrase what Kutcher tells Grylls, “like two years ago I got this crazy, incredibly rare form of vasculitis, that like knocked out my vision, it knocked out my hearing, it knocked out like all my equilibrium.”

Kutcher Says It Took Him Roughly a Year to Recover from The Ailment.

“You don’t fully appreciate it until it’s gone. Until you go, ‘I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to see again, I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to hear again, I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to walk again,’ ” he says.

On Monday, Kutcher provided more context for the tweet he posted Sunday, writing that the incident in question occurred three years ago.

He stated he is fully recovered and ready to go on and hopes to run this year’s TCS New York City Marathon in November on behalf of his anti-child-trafficking nonprofit Thorn.

What Is Vasculitis?

Vasculitis is an autoimmune condition, meaning that it’s the result of the body being attacked by its own immune system. There are numerous types of vasculitis, and while it’s not known which impacted Kutcher, all forms involve swelling in the walls of blood vessels and can result in a variety of illnesses.

According to the National Institutes of Health, common symptoms include a high temperature, a decrease in appetite, extreme tiredness, a skin rash, and pain.

The severity and location of vasculitis in the body can be linked to other symptoms. In extreme circumstances, organ failure and aneurysms may develop.

What Causes Vasculitis?

The exact root of vasculitis is still a mystery. People of all ages are susceptible to developing the disease, however, some subtypes are more common in some demographics than others. Some vasculitis forms may also be affected by a person’s family history.

Some drugs, such as hydralazine, levamisole, and propylthiouracil, can increase the danger. The risks of developing vasculitis are further increased by the use of tobacco products and illicit drugs such as cocaine.

Vasculitis can occur in people who have other autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma. Vasculitis can also be brought on by Hepatitis B or C, as well as lymphoma.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says that while treatment for vasculitis varies on the severity of the condition, in some situations, moderate symptoms can be alleviated with over-the-counter medication.

Medication to control the immune system, reduce edema, or increase blood flow may be necessary for more severe instances.

“Medication can alleviate vasculitis symptoms and prevent flare-ups and problems if you have been diagnosed with the disease.

Assuming the vasculitis is successfully treated, the patient may experience a remission “according to the National Institutes of Health.
