American director Kenny Ortega and writers Neil Cuthbert and Mick Garris brought the fantastical comedic horror picture Hocus Pocus to the big screen in 1993.
On Halloween night in Salem, Massachusetts, a virgin young guy (Omri Katz) unwittingly resurrects a malevolent comedy trio of witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy).
Hocus Pocus 2 Release Date: When Is Hocus Pocus 2 Released?
Once again, the only question is whether or not you can hold up until Halloween to watch Hocus Pocus 2 when it debuts on Disney+ on September 30.
Production on the sequel began on October 18, 2021, in Rhode Island, and finished on January 27, 2022.
While we wait for Hocus Pocus 2, we can always watch the original film again on Disney+ to satisfy our witchy needs in the meanwhile.
What Else Do We Know About the Confirmed Cast?
Sarah, Bette, and Kathy are returning to their roles in the sequel, and they will be joined by eleven new cast members.
Cast members include: Tony Hale (Arrested Development, Veep), Sam Richardson (The Tomorrow War, Veep), Juju Brener, Froy Gutierrez (Teen Wolf), Taylor Henderson, Nina Kitchen, and Lilia Buckingham (Crown Lake), Belissa Escobedo (Don’t Look Deeper), and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso, Sex Education).
Doug Jones, who appeared in the first film, will also be back for the follow-up. In a tweet accompanied by a GIF of Midler as Winnie Sanderson, the actress who played Max’s younger sister Dani in the 1993 film, hinted to her involvement, adding, “2022 will be ‘Mah-velous!.”
Here’s what Fletcher had to say about it in a press release: “Humor is more important than ever right now.
We need to have fun every day, and with these three amazing women playing delectable characters from a classic film, that’s easy to do. It’s an honor to work with my old friends at Disney again, and I feel lucky to have a hand in resurrecting these witches.
I am very excited to get started on this picture, as it will appeal to audiences of all ages, from those who grew up with the original to those who have yet to see it.”
What Will Hocus Pocus 2 Be About?
In May of 2021, when the sequel was officially announced, we also received our first look at the film’s plot.
Three young women accidently resurrect the Sanderson Sisters in present-day Salem, and now they must devise a plan to prevent the child-hungry witches from causing havoc in a different way.
Similarities can be drawn to the novel sequel published in July 2018 and focusing on Max and Allison’s daughter Poppy, her friend Travis, and a girl named Isabella, on whom Poppy has a crush.
Poppy, hoping to win Isabella’s favor, sneaks into the Sanderson home during a blood moon and mistakenly resurrects the sisters.
This may or may not reflect what actually occurs in the upcoming film sequel and hence may not be considered canon. Spoiler alert: the original film ended with the magic book winking its eye, demonstrating it was still alive and the witches could return.
The fact that the original cast members are all back and raving about the sequel is enough to get us excited. In November of the year 2020, Midler stated, “We looked over [the script], and I believe all of us agreed that it was quite excellent.”
Worry not, for Hocus Pocus 2 will include (at least) one musical number similar to the groundbreaking “I Put a Spell on You” scene from the original film. The sisters’ performance of “The Bitch is Back” by Elton John was featured in video broadcast at Disney’s upfronts presentation, and we can’t wait to see the full episode.
While the sequel, Hocus Pocus 2, won’t be accessible until September 30, the first film may be viewed right now on Disney+.
Watch the Hocus Pocus 2 Trailer Here!
As was noted above, the first Hocus Pocus 2 trailer was released on June 28, 2022, and while it was light in story, it certainly made up for it in creepiness.
It was hinted in the preview that the Sanderson Sisters will be back, and other iconic Hocus Pocus props like the Black Flame Candle were also shown. There’s a lot to look forward to, but we’d like to see a full trailer before the movie comes out.
The same information is repeated here in case you missed it up top:
We had already been given an exclusive first glance at the sisters upon their homecoming, as well as a brief peek of them in action. Also, the Disney+ 2022 teaser contains one whole second of footage, so you can play it over and over again.
