The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has barred actor Will Smith from attending the Oscars for the next ten years. This was done as a form of retaliation for the actor slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors met Friday morning to examine the implications of actor Will Smith’s slap of presenter Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards presentation and voted to bar Smith from all Academy events for ten years, including the Oscars.

Smith, who left the Academy last week, issued a statement shortly after, stating, “I accept and appreciate the Academy’s decision.”

Here Is the Academy’s Statement:

“The 94th Academy Awards were supposed to be a celebration of the many people in our community who accomplished wonderful work this year; yet, those moments were overshadowed by Mr. Smith’s disrespectful and damaging actions on stage.”

We didn’t appropriately handle the situation in the room during our telecast. We apologize for this. We had an opportunity to set an example for our visitors, viewers, and Academy family throughout the world, but we failed miserably because we were unprepared for the unprecedented.

In addition to accepting Will Smith’s resignation, the Board of Governors called a meeting today to decide how best to respond to his behavior at the Oscars. Mr. Smith will not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or online, for a period of ten years, beginning April 8, 2022. This includes, but is not limited to, the Academy Awards.

We wish to thank Mr. Rock for keeping his cool in the face of adversity. We’d also like to express our gratitude to our hosts, nominees, presenters, and winners for their elegance and grace throughout the show.

This measure, which we are taking today in reaction to Will Smith’s behavior, is part of a greater purpose of ensuring the safety of our artists and guests, as well as restoring faith in the Academy. We also hope that this will mark the start of a period of healing and repair for all parties engaged and affected.”

With Smith’s membership no longer active after his departure, the group didn’t have many other alternatives to impose. His resignation and subsequent exclusion from future telecasts do not stop him from being nominated for or winning future Academy Awards during that time.

Industry insiders and moviegoers have called for Smith’s Oscar to be revoked, despite the Oscars’ lack of legal jurisdiction to do so. To put everything in perspective, convicted criminals Harvey Weinstein and director Roman Polanski still have their Oscars despite their banishment.

The Academy started formal disciplinary processes on March 30 and had planned to hold a board meeting on April 18 to decide on any disciplinary penalties. The meeting was rescheduled to Friday due to Smith’s membership resignation from the Academy on April 1.

After a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, Smith assaulted Rock. Pinkett Smith has spoken up about her baldness. The day following the incident, Smith apologized to Rock on Instagram.

Following the incident, the Oscars battled with messaging and fallout. The decision to allow the “King Richard” actor and producer to take his statuette and talk for many minutes without interruption drew a barrage of criticism from Academy members and Hollywood industry insiders. The Academy said in a statement when the disciplinary proceedings were revealed that Smith refused to leave the ceremony, which many sources have denied.

Has the “Slap Gate” Saga Ended? the Academy Has Spoken, at Least for The Moment.

In the aftermath of the #MeToo movement and Harvey Weinstein’s expulsion, the Academy’s Standards of Conduct process was modified in December 2017. The Board of Governors currently has 54 members. Three governors represent each of the Academy’s 17 branches, with three governors-at-large appointed by the president and elected board. After being elected in June 2021, twelve of the board members are serving for the first time.
