Taylor Even though John Smith was overjoyed at the prospect of playing Tate in “Where the Crawdads Sing,” his sisters’ joy was unmatched.
“When I called and told my sisters about it, they were freaked out about it.” There were no doubts in my mind about the significance of the situation.
Both Smith and co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones were deeply moved by the best-selling novel by Delia Owens, on which the film is based. “I fell in love with Kya, her story, the world, and the marsh after reading the novel.
There is little doubt that all those who saw the article were pleased with the results “As Edgar-Jones puts it. As a writer, she’d never had the opportunity to explore “her power and her resilience” before in a character.
“This is incredibly necessary to see women at the head of films, be complicated and have strength, but yet be able to be gentle and curious, too,” she says.
Smith hadn’t even finished the book when he auditioned for the role. And as he arrived at the end of his journey, he realized what all the fuss was about:

As Smith points out, “everyone’s going to have varying impressions of Kya and Tate, as well as the marsh and their hut.”
“But I believe what’s good to do whenever a book is turned to the cinema is to catch the essence and soul of the character and to uncover the subtle differences that maybe aren’t on the page and create a real, fleshed-out figure.”

She has experience with book adaptations, having worked on “Normal People” as well as “Under the Banner of Heaven,” both of which were based on bestsellers.
She advises viewers to realize that each one is “always going to be a little bit different” and embrace that fact. To see how a set designer or costumer envisioned the area or Kya’s attire was “very exciting for us, too,” she adds.
When you’re working on a movie and you’re only a small part of the whole thing, it’s extremely wonderful,” she says.
“An entire team must work together and have an agreed-upon goal in order to accomplish a goal As an actor, I think it’s a lot of fun to walk into all these varied interpretations of a book you’ve read.”
