Rosa Dolores Alvero Marcano, better known as Rita Moreno, was born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, on December 11, 1931. While her mother was a seamstress, her father was a farmer named Francisco José Alvero.

Francisco is Moreno’s younger brother. Moreno’s mother moved the family to New York City when she was a little girl. She began taking dance lessons from a Spanish dancer as soon as she arrived.

When she was just 11 years old, Moreno began working as a Spanish-language dubbing actress for American films. In “Skydrift,” she made her Broadway debut at the age of 13, attracting the attention of Hollywood casting directors. Moreno was a resident of Valley Stream, Long Island, at the time.

Film Career

In the last years of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Moreno made her start in the film industry. Three films starring her were released in 1950, including the MGM musicals “The Toast of New Orleans” and “Pagan Love Song.”

The musical comedy “Singin’ in the Rain” starred Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, while Moreno played Zelda Zanders, a silent cinema star. While Moreno’s career continued to flourish during the decade that followed the 1950s, she was seen in a slew of films, including The Fabulous Senorita, The Vagabond King, The Deerslayer, and Fort Vengeance, Latin Lovers, Jivaro, and a slew of others.

The majority of her roles at this time were unsettling since she felt that they were stereotypically Hispanic. Her minor role as a Burmese concubine in “The King and I” was an exception.
