Early Life and Biography
Jonas Kaufmann was born in Munich on July 10th, 1969. His father worked as an insurance agent, while his mother was a kindergarten teacher. He began studying piano at the age of eight and went on to the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich for vocal training.
Career
He made his professional debut at the Staatstheater Saarbrücken in 1994 and was quickly invited to make debuts at the Stuttgart Opera and the Hamburg State Opera in Germany, as well as international debuts at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Opéra National de Paris, and La Scala.
He gained great praise for his portrayal of Don José in Bizet’s Carmen at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 2006/07. The concert was recorded and released on DVD in November 2010. In April 2011, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Siegmund in Robert Lepage’s new production of Wagner’s Die Walküre.
In September 2011, he had surgery to remove a lymph node from his chest. In December, he returned to the stage in Gounod’s Faust. Kaufmann made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2013 in the title role of Wagner’s Parsifal.
Kaufmann made his Met debut in February 2014 in the title role of Massenet’s Werther. After that, he went on tour with Helmut Deutsch, presenting Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle. He made his Royal Opera House debut as Des Grieux in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut in June 2014.
In 2018, Kaufmann made his stage debut as Tristan in the second act of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. In 2021, Kaufmann gave concerts in Madrid and Vienna, sang in new Aida and Parsifal productions in Paris and Vienna, and had his full-scale role debut as Tristan at the Bayerische Staatsoper.
Kaufmann began the year 2022 with a role debut as Peter Grimes at the Wiener Staatsoper. In March 2022, Antonio Pappano has arranged a studio recording of Turandot in the Santa Cecilia auditorium. Jonas Kaufmann sang the role of Calaf for the first time, opposite Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role.
