While living in Greenwich Village in New York City in 1966, James created a band called “Flying Machine” and began playing regularly.

Taylor began taking heroin in 1966, and by the end of the year, he was completely dependent on it. James returned to North Carolina, where he underwent six months of treatment, following the breakup of the band he formed.

The head of A&R for the Beatles’ newly created record company, “Apple Records,” met Taylor in 1967 when he recovered and moved to London. Before signing a record deal with Apple Records, James had made a demo tape that impressed Asher.

After completing the album’s recording, Taylor returned to the United States, where he checked into a mental health facility in Massachusetts after resuming his heroin usage.

Due to James Taylor’s sickness, the album “James Taylor” was released in February of 1969 but failed to sell well.

By the time he had recovered, Taylor was writing songs again and in October 1969, after signing a new contract with Warner Bros. Records, he moved to California. For his second studio album, “Sweet Baby James,” James kept Asher as his manager.

The album and its a lead song, “Fire & Rain,” were instant hits, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Grammy Award nominations included Album of the Year for “Sweet Baby James,” which sold more than $1.5 million copies.

Taylor’s third album, “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon,” was released in April 1971 and received widespread acclaim.

It was the album’s cover of Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend” that debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and was awarded the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance.

Despite entering the Top 10 on the Billboard charts, James released his fourth album, “One Man Dog,” in November 1972, to lackluster reviews.

It wasn’t until January 1974, when he recorded “Walking Man,” that Taylor returned to the studio for the first time in more than a year. In the United States, the album was a flop, earning negative reviews and selling just 300,000 copies.
