Following the slap at the Oscars, Will Smith released an emotional video on his social media platforms.
When Chris Rock made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and her appearance, the 53-year-old actor stirred uproar by slapping him onstage. Smith apologized on Instagram but has since gone silent.
On his YouTube and Instagram pages, Smith posted a nearly six-minute video in which he responds to questions that have been circulating since his award acceptance speech, beginning with why he didn’t apologize to Rock in his victory speech.
It’s all fuzzy,” Will Smith remarked. After contacting Chris, I received the following response: “He is not yet ready to talk, but will do so when he is. In the meantime, I apologize to you, Chris.” As soon as you’re ready to talk, I’ll be right there.
When he has a chance, he apologizes to Rock’s mother for his behavior. At that moment, “I just didn’t realize, I wasn’t thinking, but how many people got harmed,” he added, recalling. His bond with Rock’s brother, Tony, maybe “irreparable,” he claimed.
After saying that he has spent the previous three months “replaying and understanding the subtleties and complexity of what happened at that moment,” he says he won’t unpack all of that right now, but he adds there is no part of him that thinks it was “the correct way to behave.” He continues.
Smith also clarified whether or not Jada had any role in recommending he do something. In his own words, “It’s like, you know, I made a choice from my own experiences, from my history with Chris,” he stated. In the end, “Jada had no role in it.”
He then apologized to her and his family for the “heat” he had caused them.
To the other candidates and winners that night, he says, “It honestly pains my heart that I have stolen and tainted your moment.” A sincere “I’m sorry” just isn’t enough.
That “disappointment individuals” is his major trauma when asked about what he would tell folks who had previously looked up to him but felt let down by his behavior.
He said, “I detest when I disappoint others.” As a result, it is painful. That I didn’t live up to people’s expectations of me hurts me personally and psychologically.
Being sorry without being ashamed of myself is the job I’m attempting to accomplish. In the end, I’m just a guy. I made a blunder, and I’m doing my best not to see myself as a jerk.
The footage comes only a week after Chris Rock made an appearance at a New York City comedy show to discuss the incident. When he said, “Anyone who claims that ‘words hurt’ has never been hit in the face,” he meant it. “I’m not going to go to the hospital because I got a paper cut,” Rock stated.
Resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a 10-year ban from the organization were issued when Smith was slapped.
Emancipation, Will Smith’s next enslavement thriller, has apparently received rave test screenings and is being touted as a possible awards candidate for Apple’s new TV service, Apple TV Plus.
